What Is IK Rating For LED Lights? What Is IP Rating?

Generally, when buying LED lamps, you will often find that IK Rating is written in the parameters of some lamps. Many people don’t know what IK Rating is. So today Green tech Lighting will talk about what IK Rating is for led lights.

Before the appearance of the IK code, the anti-impact code often appeared together with the IP rating protection to indicate the level of its impact protection, such as IP65(9), which is distinguished from the code of the IP protection level by brackets, but it was later canceled internationally. It is marked with the IK code and is still in use today.

The IK level is an internationally accepted digital code used to indicate the protection level of electrical equipment enclosures against external mechanical collisions. For outdoor equipment, whether it is suspended, buried in the ground or placed outdoors, it needs to have corresponding IK requirements. In the lighting industry, it is necessary to make IK protection levels for outdoor flood lights, street lights, stadium lights and some special lights. After all, the use environment of these outdoor lights is often harsh, and it is necessary to check whether the protection level of the lighting product shell Meet industry and national requirements. The unit of IK rating is Joule.

So what are the IK ratings that we often use for led lighting?

In the IEC62262 protection level code, it consists of two numbers, namely IK01, IK02, IK03, IK04, IK05, IK06, IK07, IK08, IK09 and IK10. IK07-IK06 is generally suitable for Indoor LED lamps such as high bay lights; the other group is suitable for street lights, stadium lights, explosion-proof lights

Each set of IK Code numbers represents a different anti-collision energy value. See the corresponding relationship between IK Rating and its corresponding collision energy f in the table below.

IK Rating chart:

IK Code

 Impact energy(J) Explains

IK00

0 No protection. In the event of a collision, the LED lights will be damaged

 IK01

0.14 The impact of an object weighing 0.25KG from a height of 56mm on the surface

 IK02

0.2 The impact of an object weighing 0.25KG from a height of 80mm on the surface

 IK03

0.35 It can withstand the impact of a 0.2KG object falling from a height of 140mm on the surface

 IK04

0.5 It can withstand the impact force of objects weighing 0.25KG on the surface falling from a height of 200mm

 IK05

0.7 It can withstand the impact of objects weighing 0.25KG from a height of 280mm on the surface

 IK06

1 it can withstand the impact of an object weighing 0.25KG from a height of 400mm on the led lights housing

 IK07

2 It can withstand the impact of an object weighing 0.5KG from a height of 400mm on the LED lamp housing

 IK08

5 It can withstand the impact of an object weighing 1.7KG from a height of 300mm on the LED lamp housing

IK09

10 Can withstand the impact of objects weighing 5KG from a height of 200mm on the surface

IK10

20 Can withstand the impact of objects weighing 5KG from a height of 400mm on the surface

In the LED lighting industry, general customers have IK Rating requirements for outdoor lighting and industrial lighting, so what are the corresponding IK ratings?

LED High bay lights: IK07/IK08

Outdoor LED Stadium lighting, High mast light: IK08 or above

LED Street lights: IK07/IK08

What is IP Rating ?

The IP Rating describes the enclosure for electronic equipment according to the definition of the European Committee for Electro Technical Standardization.

IP is standing for Ingress Security, the security of the product versus ecological effects like strong things or fluids. The IP rating includes two figures which are describing the height of the protection versus these effects. The larger the number, the greater the protection.

First Digit – Solids Protection

The first number tells you just how well safeguarded the fixture protests solids– such as dust. The higher the number the more protected it is.

Second Digit – Liquid Protection

The second number is utilized to tell you about the degree of fluid protection: 0 being no protection as well as 8 being the highest offered level of protection. What is the connection of IP rating to LED luminaires?

IP Rating Table

Numbers

Protection against solid objects

Protection against liquids

0

no protection no protection

1

solid objects over 50mm, e.g. touch by hand vertically falling drops of water, e.g. condensation

2

solid objects over 12mm, e.g. fingers direct spray of water up to 15° from vertical

3

solid objects over 2,5mm, e.g. tools and wires direct spray of water up to 60° from vertical

4

solid objects over 1mm, e.g. small tools, small wires water spray from all directions

5

dust, but limited (no harmful deposit) low pressure water jets from all directions

6

totally protected from dust temporary flooding of water, e.g. ship decks

7

immersion bath between 15cm and 1m

8

immersion bath for long period – under pressure
